EU FUNDING IS CHANGING: In 2027, “Good Ideas” Will No Longer Be Enough
For years, organisations approached EU funding with a simple question:
“Do we have a good project idea?”
For 2027, that may be the wrong question.
Europe is increasingly directing funding towards projects that strengthen technological sovereignty, Artificial Intelligence, cybersecurity, energy resilience, strategic industrial capacity and dual-use technologies.
The message is becoming clear:
Europe does not only want innovation. It wants strategic innovation.
A technically excellent proposal may therefore still struggle if it cannot demonstrate why Europe needs the project, why it matters now, how it strengthens European capabilities and how results can move beyond research into deployment, markets or policy.
Universities, SMEs, research centres, municipalities and technology companies should already be asking:
Where does our organisation fit in Europe’s next strategic priorities?
Because the strongest proposals of 2027 will probably not start when a call opens.
They are being designed now.
